Maths at Emneth Academy

Intent

We would like the children of Emneth Academy to have access to a mathematical curriculum, which is accessible to all, that will maximise the development of every child’s mathematical ability and academic achievement.

We deliver maths lessons that are creative and engaging and enable every child to be a successful mathematician. We want children to make rich connections and to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated mathematical problems.

We would like our pupils to be able to apply their mathematical knowledge across all areas of the curriculum, wherever possible, and to know that it is essential to everyday life. As our pupils progress, we would like our pupils to be able to understand the world, have the ability to reason mathematically, have an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.

Implementation

The children of Emneth Academy follow a Mastery approach, which enables children to progress through stages of learning for each component of maths. These components increase in challenge and complexity. As children gain more confidence in their learning, children are challenged to solve more rich and complex mathematical problems which are often open-ended and will require higher order thinking skills. Mistakes and misconceptions are planned for and are a valuable part of the learning process and are used to enhance the learning journey.

Impact

As a result of the Mastery approach to mathematical teaching and learning, each child has the opportunity to deepen their mathematical understanding during each lesson. The children are constantly assessed in class through ongoing assessment for learning, where errors and misconceptions are swiftly addressed. More formal assessments are also carried out so that gaps in knowledge inform future planning.
